Grade 6

Welcome to the 2017 Grade 6 page!

We hope all our families had a wonderful two week break. We are very excited to continue working with our students on achieving success in their final term of primary school.

The Grade 6 team consists of Sally Dawson (Team Leader), Darleene Miles, Olivia Hogan and Jarryd Stirling. You can find us located in room 11 (6JS), room 12 (6SD), room 13 (6OH) and room 14 (6DM). We have all thoroughly enjoyed the year so far and are all looking forward to helping all our students achieve their very best in their final term of primary school.

The one-to-one iPad program in Grade 6 is running successfully. The iPad program enhances student learning through the use of many educational applications, the ability to research information on the internet at any time and to create their own published pieces in a variety of ways, such as video tutorials, slideshows or illustrated word documents.

Some of the fantastic programs the Grade 6 students will participate in this term include;

  • Electives
  • Sports Days
  • Ability based Maths Groups
  • Ability based Writing Groups
  • Ability based Maths Masters Groups
  • Daily 5 Literacy sessions
  • CAFE reading strategies
  • Text Response Essays
  •  1:1 iPad program
  • Gender Groups
  • Interschool Sports
  • Growth Mindset/Bucket Fillers

TERM 3 CURRICULUM

LITERACY:  Students will participate in four Daily 5 sessions per week. Each week they will work on a whole class CAFE strategy with a shared text. They will also work practice individual strategies when completing activities off a Daily 4 contract. Over the term we will be looking at the following whole class CAFE strategies: 'Identify the author's purpose', 'Identify implicit and explicit information', .'Ask thin and thick questions when reading', 'Continuously make meaning while reading', 'Support inference with evidence', and 'Monitoring meaning by skimming scanning and reviewing'. During Daily 5 Teacher Focus Group sessions, students will be exposed to a Text Response Essay task, which is designed to extend their literacy skills. This task is similar to that of which they will be exposed to in Secondary College, giving our students a head start into 2018.

NUMERACY: This term in maths sessions, we are covering the numeracy areas of 'Number and Place Value', 'Measurement and Geometry' and 'Statistics and Probability'. Students will attend ability based maths groups learning about the topics of, 'Data Representation and Interpretation', 'Location and Transformation', and 'Patterns and Algebra'. Students are placed in ability based maths groups to ensure the learning and teaching are targeted for their own specific needs. They will also participate in streamed 'Maths Masters' sessions each week, working towards gaining components of their individual Maths Masters Belt.

INTEGRATED TOPIC: Term 4's Integrated Topic is titled 'Curiosity'. Students apply their curiosity to the wonders of chemical and physical sciences, learning how and why things around us behave as they do.

We are looking forward to a successful and eventful final term!

Kind regards,

Grade 6 Team.
